Jeff Cauhape K7BCV, Sue Cauhape KI7CTT, Justin Nunn KI7CGJ, and Mary Nunn KI7CGI followed the Pony section that went from Cold Springs to Railroad Pass over Basque Summit of the Desatoya Range. Jeff was looking forward to not having to set up camp and a station on some blustery mountaintop. “RIDE FOR THE BRAND!!  What an honor to get to participate in a slice of American History this past week.  From 1860 -1861 the US Mail was carried between St Joseph MO & Sacramento CA by the PONY EXPRESS.  Each year in June over 750 riders, riding 24/7, participate in the re-ride carrying the mail 1966 miles in 10 days.  The NPEA is a world class organization that has coordinated the re-ride for 40 years.  A big thank you to Les Bennington, Ron &  Kathy L. The Buffalo Soldiers greeted the final Pony Express riders following a 1667 mile mail delivery from Sacramento, California to St. Joseph, Missouri. Due to heat & humidity the mail was late getting to Cozad. PE riders had time to visit & reconnect with each other. Then as Team Captain Mitch Ziebell swears us in, the full moon created a special moment s you look around and see your friends faces highlighted! Then Dee & Breyer start us off, running past a skunk in the ditch in the first mile. Shoestring lights on the back of their trailer worked as their guide.
