This may not be a race, but I know all riders strive to be on time. When California is running a little behind you would not believe how those riders in the mountains just crash down the hill. We have been known to make up 3 hours and arrive in Old Sac on time. I don’t think the public realizes how individual this “sport” is. The riders just do the best they can. We have some riders who don't ride very well and others that are expert riders. We depend on the more experienced riders to try and make up time. Like this morning, the horse became lame at the tom of the mountain and had to be walked down the mountain to the next rider. These things happen and we just try to deal with them as we can. Like I always say, this is not a race, we are doing this to educate the world as to how the men did this back in 1860 and 1861.
