Saint Joseph is the seat of Buchanan County and a city in northwestern Missouri, United States, located on the Missouri River and 55 miles northwest of Kansas City. It is well connected to neighboring towns and cities by Interstate 29, Interstate 229, and U.S. Highways 36, 59, 71, and 169 as well as Routes 6, 371, 752, and 759. Nicknamed St. Joe or the City Worthwhile, it is situated on the state border with Kansas, directly across from Elwood. Incorporated in 1843, it is part of the St. Joseph Metropolitan Statistical Area. It was named after Joseph Robidoux, the founder of Saint Joseph. The city is also known as the place where the Pony Express started and Jesse James was shot.
