The National Pony Express Association recently conducted its an annual re-ride duplicating the original Pony Express trail and Divide resident Kelly Turney participated.
Here she generously gives readers an inside look at the event:
“Getting involved with Pony Express has long been a bucket list activity for me. My friend Cheryl invited me to join her on her first ride this year so I went to a meeting. I was sworn in as a rider and received my patches, pins and a little Gideon Bible. I bought a red shirt, yellow scarf and a brown vest.
“On June 11 our ride started when Cheryl picked up the 60-pound Pony Express mail mochila* at the Live Oak School on Malcom Dixon Road, El Dorado Hills. We rode 2.7 miles to Pleasant Grove House (Historic PE relay station), where the mochila was passed to the next rider.
