Despite the high temperatures Thursday afternoon, riders in the National Pony Express Association’s annual Re-Ride pressed on through south-central Nebraska and Dawson County on June 19.
A group of riders ran late due to delays throughout the day from the extreme heat across the region. But a small crowd of eager onlookers were awaiting the Brady-Cozad riders at the 96 Ranch a few miles southeast of Gothenburg at the original Midway Station built in the early 1850s.
The incoming rider, Krystal Meyers, arrived 36 minutes late, but her group was in high spirits as the sun was going down and the breeze picked up.
“It felt super nice when the breeze came in and the sun went down, but it’s just a part of the experience,” she said. “You have to be in different weathers like they (the original Pony Express riders) went through that too.
