Hot and Humid, But the Mail Must Go Through!

The Keith County, Nebraska, Riders received the mochila from the Colorado Riders just south of Big Springs at about 8:00am MDT Thursday. Weather was the word of the day…….hot and HUMID!  It played havoc with the horses, as they simply ran out of gas as the day went on.   Temps started out hot and just got hotter, with the “feels like” temp much, much higher that the actual temp.  Stifling, hot, humid with minimal breeze.  But, The Pony carried on………….. We were able to have a presentation at Tri-Trails Park south of, Continue Reading

The 2017 XP Re-Ride in Keith County, Nebraska, went very well.  Late afternoon and early evening thunderstorms threatened to shunt our path off of the gravel roads and onto pavement (not for the horses, of course, but for the trailer rigs) but little rain fell and the Re-Ride trail was navigable the whole 43.5 mile distance.  There was still a light cloud cover, but the 98% moon shown through enough to greatly help us see. The North Platte Riders brought the mail 9 miles extra for our section, as we, Continue Reading

Re-Ride in Southwest Nebraska

FROM: Mary Cone, Keith County, Nebraska, Trail Captain
June 23rd, 2016 PDT

The weather received an A+ for this year’s Re-Ride in southwest Nebraska. Very little wind and temps in the 60’s. A slightly cloud-obscured moon that has waned a bit from full helped, too. Unfortunately, our contingent was short of riders, horses and rigs this year. But, in true Pony Express spirit, we received help to cover some miles at both ends of our Re-Ride distance. Colorado Riders came an extra 6 miles on our west end. Then the North Platte Riders started riding about 6.4 miles early to help us, Continue Reading

Anticipation, and then boom, it’s over. The Pony Re-ride through Keith County, Nebraska, was one of the best. We received the mail south of Paxton from the North Platte Riders about 10 minutes early. This got us off to a great start in the mid-afternoon sunshine!! Bill rode Ginger, Donna was on Comet, Carl had Elvis, Kristy rode Jet and Spencer, Rick rode Phoenix and Cash, Don was on Little Brother, Angie rode Yeller, Mary Dale had Casper (who has been a mount for someone every year since 2002), Karla, Continue Reading

The name of the game was weather-the nasty kind!

The 2014 Re-Ride of the Pony Express will be a memory to long remember for the Keith County, Nebraska Re-Riders!! The name of the game was weather-the nasty kind!   You’ve read previously about the Colorado Riders coming through the tornado warning, rain, lightning, hail, wind………wow, I don’t know how they did it!! And in the dark, no less. Great job, Colorado!   As our group’s ride time approached, we were making phone calls, trying to figure out when to gather, waiting out the tornado warnings in a safe place., Continue Reading
